It is believed that approximately 750,000 people were exposed to the contaminants.

In 1982, volatile organic compounds (known as “VOCs”) were found in the drinking water that was produced by multiple water treatment plants at Camp LeJeune. Dating all the way back to 1953, and continuing until 1987, traces of perchloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), Benzene, and vinyl chloride were routinely found in the drinking water. These levels have been determined by the federal government to exceed the EPA maximum levels of contamination by several hundred times. These high contamination levels came from the water treatment plants at Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point.

What was causing the contaminated water at Camp LeJeune?
The water treatment facility at Hadnot Point opened in 1942 and provided water to the following areas: Berkley Manor, Paradise Point, Hospital Point Family Housing, Mainside Barracks, and Family Housing at Midway Park. Tarawa Terrace opened operations in 1952 and provided water to the Knox Trailer Park and to Tarawa Terrace family housing. The question is: What caused the water contamination at Hadnot Point and Tarawa Terrace? What was uncovered long after the government knew about it was that underground storage tanks were leaking contaminants into the water, along with waste from industrial spills and waste disposal sites. At Tarawa Terrace, the main contamination was caused by an off-base dry cleaning company called ABC One-Hour Cleaners. The company disposed of its chemicals and other contaminants into the ground, which directly affected the underground water supply.
While the water was continuously contaminated from 1953 to 1987, the wells that were the most contaminated were eventually shut down in 1985.
Can I file a lawsuit against the government for giving me cancer or other injuries due to the contaminated water at Camp LeJeune?
Currently, Camp LeJeune cancer and toxic water contamination claim lawsuits cannot be filed for these injuries. Things are about to change, though. There is currently a bill that is likely to pass the House and the Senate that will allow military members who were injured by the water at Camp LeJeune to get legal assistance and hire an attorney to file a lawsuit. The bill has the support of both Democrats and Republicans. If the bill passes, anyone who was on the Camp LeJeune base for more than 30 days between 1953 and 1987, and who sustained an injury as described above, may be eligible to get a lawyer to file a water contamination lawsuit for compensation or settlement. These potential injured people include Marines, Seabees, family members who were on base, and civilians and government contractors who were at Camp LeJeune.
