In November of 2020, 24-year-old Joshua Brumm went snowboarding in Vail, Colorado. He fell onto a rock, injuring his left kidney and other internal organs. He presented to Vail Health Hospital, and was then airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center for further treatment. Upon arriving in Denver, Brumm spent 8 days in and out of operating rooms where doctors attempted to stop his internal bleeding. These efforts were unsuccessful. Brumm’s kidney was removed, and doctors believed that solved the issues at hand. It should have been very clear to medical professionals, however, that Joshua’s issues were far from solved. Immediately following surgery, he continued to need blood transfusions, yet was released from the hospital into his mother’s care after just four days following surgery. Only a few hours after being released, Joshua suffered from extensive blood loss and died.
The negligent treatment Brumm received at Denver Health Medical Center was reason enough to establish a medical malpractice case, however this was just the start of the problems the Brumm family encountered with Denver Health. As many do in a situation such as this, the family pursued legal action against the healthcare team at the hospital in which Joshua was treated. Upon investigation, the family’s attorney found Brumm’s discharge paperwork was not completed until after he had passed away! The hospital clearly tried to cover up the true cause of his death.
