Post-partum hemorrhage is the leading cause of pregnancy-related complications. An estimated 2.9% of women who give birth in the United States will bleed too much and require intervention. In the last 10 years, there has been a 183% increase in the number of women who required a blood transfusion near the time of giving birth. When a post-operative c-section patient is losing blood volume, it is a medical emergency. Since post-partum hemorrhage is a known complication (particularly in women who undergo a c-section, and especially those who have had multiple prior c-sections), all healthcare providers must be on high alert for any signs and symptoms of bleeding. Every minute counts in diagnosing and treating a post-partum hemorrhage. Any delay can be catastrophic, resulting in the death of the woman. The two most critical steps in treating a post-partum hemorrhage are: (1) initiate Massive Transfusion Protocol to emergently give the patient blood product to increase the volume in her body; and (2) get the patient to the operating room as quickly as possible to find and to stop the bleed. If these steps are timely and appropriately initiated, the patient will survive the bleed with no sequelae. If, however, the nurses and doctor delay in initiating the transfusion and getting the patient to surgery, the patient will likely die.
